Today, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Janet Napolitano, announced the award of approximately $10 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funding for the Dayton International Airport. Of the stimulus funding allocated to Transportation Security Administration (TSA), $700 million was specifically dedicated for checked baggage screening projects. Dayton International Airport is one of only eighteen US airports slated to receive stimulus funding.
Under the Airport’s in line baggage project, the TSA baggage screening equipment will be removed from the ticketing lobby and customers will no longer be required to walk their checked baggage to screening equipment. Not only will it be more convenient for passengers, it will enhance security with the addition of state-of-the art checked baggage screening equipment. The TSA will be purchasing and installing the equipment itself as part of the project at an Airport-estimated cost of approximately $5 million. Project construction is estimated to begin in January 2010 and fully completed in early 2011.
“We are thrilled to receive this stimulus funding to construct a state-of-the-art baggage screening facility. This project will enhance security and safety, while restoring the ticketing lobby to its original function of ticketing,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, Director of Aviation.
